Byrd’s simple, unshowy Mass for Five Voices — composed for secret, Catholic worship in a Protestant land — is interspersed by French and Flemish music from 16th century masters of Renaissance polyphony.

Peter Phillips describes the theme behind much of this programme as “the uncertainty of human existence, and the comfort music can bring to those living in doubt”, which then closes with the irrepressible joy and hope of the Magnificat. Sung by the pure voices of The Tallis Scholars, this intimate music will glow in the King’s College chapel acoustic.
